About the Club
History
The first Junior Civitan club was formed in January 1927 at South Portland High School in Maine. In 1932, the first three charters were issued to clubs in Portland, Maine; Bristol, Tennessee; and Rogersville, Alabama. The first Canadian club was chartered in 1957 in East Toronto, Ontario.
The Northwest High School Junior Civitan club began in 1993.
Today there are nearly 17,000 members in more than 500 clubs spread throughout the world.
Objectives
The objectives of a Junior Civitan are:
To practice and promote good citizenship in the home, school, community, and nation.
To promote high standards of scholarship and conduct in the school.
To serve the school, community, and nation.
To support good government on all levels and encourage respect for the law.
To develop leadership through unselfish service.
To practice the Golden Rule.
Conventions
Each year two conventions are held. In the spring, the Valley District holds its District Convention. It usually lasts from Friday until Sunday. In June, the International Convention is held (in 1999, it will be in Atlanta). The purpose of Conventions is to elect new officers for the district and international, but we have fun doing it! Conventions usually consist of dances, ice cream socials, and the For-Lack-Of-A-Better-Name Games (which include silly games like Suck-and-Blow, Chubby Bunny, Dizzy Lizzy, Body Burgers, etc.). It usually costs around $150 to attend each convention but the cost can be reduced by fundraisers! This year, we currently have the International President in our club, Leigh Ellen Spiceland.
How to Join
At the beginning of the year, we will be having a membership drive. Look for flyers and listen for announcements. Then ask an officer or the club sponsor, Mr. Cartwright, for a membership application.
